A time where TV Show was teaching you interesting Things, with Substances, you felt you learned something.... this was the paßt...
A master of beautiful sound!
Oscar Peterson was a musical genius and a gentleman, with as much character as one could ever find in a human. I love this man.

When I’m asked what I do for a living I tell people I’m a musician and then I look at someone like Oscar petersen and I realise I’m not remotely even in the same universe as a someone like that. I’ve no idea how someone gets this good at doing anything.
It's almost like the piano just says to him tell me what you want me to do and I'll do it...
What is that opening piece?
We may never touch the hand of God…. but if you got to shake Mr. Petersons hand, you were one away. 🤘🕊❤️🤘 💫✨
The only thing better than watching a master at work: watching two masters at work
Thank You!!! I was listening to this this morning, trying to hear what they were saying.
So deep, so cool.
So truly amazing
0:38 please someone transcribe those notes 😍😍😍
0:38: Before anyone makes a fool of themselves calling this stride piano, let me warn you right now, that's swing piano. Art Tatum didn't play stride, Teddy Wilson didn't play stride, Oscar Peterson CERTAINLY did not play stride. Stride piano was not about backing yourself like a whole band rhythm section, it was about dropping the left hand bass notes down as far as possible and playing a melodic single note bassline like a tuba or upright bassist would play while using rather blues like improv in the right hand.
That’s your opinion it is not a fact. Tatum did play stride. His classic version of Tea for Two from the 1930’s is stride.
@@bd1845 No it's not, that's swing, pure and simple. Stride piano is derived from gospel styles, mainly shouts. Swing was based more on playing in a melodic and almost orchestral fashion, the left hand was mainly using tenths and full voicings to imitate a reed section with an upright bass while the right hand was mainly doing single note melodic work like a clarinet, interspersed with full octave chord voicings imitating the brass section of the band. Stride is a far different genre than swing, a distinction most people don't make unfortunately.
@@PiotrBarcz stop embarrassing yourself. Fats Waller was the king of stride and Tatum was a big fan and influenced him. There is plenty of recorded evidence of Tatum playing stride. If you cant accept it because of your own misguided assumptions of what constitutes stride piano then I can’t help you. ruclips.net/video/-UWoYFlywkY/видео.htmlsi=p5fGx0IqZANxKoZs Guess Oscar isn’t playing stride here either according to your own definition…
@@bd1845 No, he isn't, the guy that made the video has no idea what he's talking about either (he's also running a rather disappointing channel just reposting existing videos for the views), that's swing. And I'm also sourcing my information from other pianists who have studied this music for decades and no exactly what they're talking about. There is a distinct difference between stride and swing, and Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum played swing. I'm not embarrassing myself, it's clear that YOU have no idea what you're talking about like 90 percent of people who make any sort of statements on this subject. Art Tatum played stride on occasion, however most of the time he played swing and used swing phrasing.
@@PiotrBarcz says it all ‘I’m sourcing my information from other pianists’ 😂😂😂 What’s it going to be next.. my friends who are composers say that Debussy wasn’t an impressionist, Bach was not a contrapuntal writer. You have changed your tune already.. no one says that Tatum or Peterson were solely stride pianists. They both exhibited the technique to play anything and played stride on many occasions, Tatum more than Peterson but not in the world according to you and your ‘teacher’ sources.
Es una leyenda y un guia para mi junto con Bill, Art y Errol
Used to wstch Dick Cavett but don’t remember that show. Very nice.
If you say Donna Summer your in big trouble.....Great sense of humour. X
Oscar seemed like a really down to earth guy... would have loved to have known him
talk about good
RIP Uncle Eli Fountain Sr on Soprano DETROIT, MI
Oscar Peterson! Supreme talent
2:41 roses of Picardy
One of my all-time favorites! I can't even wrap my head around his talent. He and Red Garland are my top two favorite musicians of all time. And then he breaks that voice out! Man, what a talent!
SO BRILLIANT ❤
I didn't know about this musician now I'm going to have to learn more about him. He's fantastic.
This guy is probably the most brilliant jazz pianist that ever lived!!🎼🎼🎼🎼
Why is it I always smile whrn OP plays
Wonderful, just wonderful.
One of the most incredible musicians to ever exist.
This may very well be the greatest thing on RUclips.
Masterly pianism, Absolutely
Peterson is not only a phenomenal pianist but a gracious and delightful person as well.
what a fine gentleman....
I got it from the man himself. It's Loo-Iss Armstrong.
🇨🇦
Amazing , genial. Out of the world
Quality television ❤❤
People who has the gift make it so easy... he seems always joking. "Thank you for this master lesson".
Absolute masterpiece. Obviously Mr. Peterson being one of the best to ever do it, but Cavett too. Incredible.
My parents were big fans and I still have some of their vinyls of this amazing man
Nice
This is so brilliant. How did our society sink into such insipid stupidity? Dick Cavett was such a great host. He trusted the intelligence of his audience. Such a host no longer exists.
Terry Gross comes to mind, but yes, it’s a rare breed these days
Can we hit rewind on America and go back to this?
I watched this when I was 11 years old in 1987. I had been a huge Beatles fan since 1982. I'm an even bigger fan now.
Total pro Oscar P.
I wish I could have seen him play live.
What do you know... Americans used to be smart.... Not that long ago.
Wonderful! Beautiful!
👏👏👏😘😘😘
Good luck with Black History Month.
eh?
